Flooring Calculator
Free flooring calculator. Find the square footage and number of boxes needed for hardwood, laminate, vinyl, or tile — with adjustable waste percentage.
Quick answer
Square feet of flooring = room area × (1 + waste percentage). Standard waste: 7-10% for laminate and vinyl plank, 10-15% for hardwood, 15-20% for diagonal patterns or complex layouts. Round up to whole boxes — flooring is sold in boxes of fixed coverage.
Flooring Calculator
How it works
Calculates how much flooring (in square feet, plus the box count if you give it a box size) you'll need to cover a room. Adds a default 10% waste factor to cover cuts, mistakes, and pattern matching.
When to use it
Use this when shopping for hardwood, laminate, vinyl plank, carpet, or tile. Bring the box-count number to the store so you don't end up one box short and have to wait for a back-order in a discontinued color.
Common mistakes
Skipping the waste factor. 10% is fine for simple rectangles; bump it to 15% for diagonal layouts, herringbone patterns, or rooms with lots of cuts around obstacles. Discontinued flooring is a nightmare to match later.
How the flooring calculator works
Step one: room area in square feet. Step two: add waste percentage to account for cuts, defects, and pattern matching. Step three: divide by box coverage (typically listed on each box, 18-25 sqft for hardwood, 20-25 sqft for laminate, 30+ for sheet vinyl) and round up to whole boxes. The calculator handles all this — enter dimensions, choose flooring type, and see total sqft, total boxes, and total cost.
When to use it
Estimating cost before ordering flooring. Sizing the order to minimize waste while ensuring you have enough. Comparing flooring options at different price points and box sizes. Planning a multi-room install where one product covers multiple spaces. Sanity-checking a contractor's flooring quote against the actual square footage.
Common mistakes
- Underestimating waste. The calculator's defaults are conservative. Diagonal layouts, busy patterns, or rooms with lots of cuts (hexagonal rooms, fireplaces, columns) need 15-20% waste. Going short means a separate trip and possible dye-lot mismatch.
- Buying exactly the calculated boxes with no extra. Always order at least one extra box. Future repairs need matching planks; dye lots change between manufacturer runs.
- Forgetting underlayment, transitions, and trim. The flooring is one cost; underlayment ($0.30-$0.80/sqft), thresholds, quarter round, and shoe molding can add 15-20% to the project total.
Frequently asked questions
How much waste should I add to flooring orders?
10% is standard for straight-lay laminate or vinyl. 15% for hardwood with random-length installation. 20% for diagonal patterns, herringbone, or complex room shapes. Always round up to the nearest box.
How many boxes of flooring do I need?
Total square footage (with waste added) divided by the coverage per box, rounded up. The calculator above does this — enter room dimensions and box size and it computes the count.
Should I buy extra flooring for future repairs?
Yes. Order at least 1 extra box beyond the calculated amount. Future repairs need to match your existing dye lot, and lots change between manufacturer runs — making a perfect match impossible without held-back stock.
